The Bad Side of Television
TV shows need to stop renewing seasons. I don’t mean to say that we should stick to one season stories, instead writers, directors and producers should stick with their original plan. Every time I hear that a shows been renewed due to popular demand a shiver runs down my spine. More often than not this means more filler content is coming out, and it ensures an unsatisfying ending. These strong feelings of renewal were instilled within me by Grey’s Anatomy, The Black List, and Criminal Minds. At some point it is time to call it quits, there is nothing of substance going on in these shows. It’s not so bad that it’s good, it’s just dreadfully boring.
Another crime of television was Game of Thrones. The story started off one way and ended up in another planet. HBO wanted to add more seasons and the writers said no, they just wanted to move on to their next project but for some reason refused to hand it over to someone else. Why would every single character survive a war against the undead in a show notorius for character deaths? Given the budget, and the complex world the show had many good seasons to give and expecting a decent ending wouldnt be unrealistic. Even the characters became something other than themselves. And this curse will befall House of the Dragon as well because season 2 is being filmed while a writers strike is going on.
One other thing I hate in the bubble of TV: streaming services. In the beginning it was pushed as innovative because you are paying for one service and getting all these shows. With cable on the other hand you had to pay for a bunch of channels you dont watch just for one channel you are going to watch. Now, the service has evolved backwards with Netflix, HBOmax, Disney+ and so on offering the same thing cable did. A bunch of subscriptions. A netflix monopoly wouldnt have been great but I think in the midst of fighting to grab some of the profits the companies lost sight of the main point.
All in all TV just has a bunch of bad things. I still watch it (not on a streaming service) because theres a bunch of good things about it as well.
